I have been using RDSS for the past several years with mixed success and have dabbled in The Matchup with less than mixed success
.
I have read the Follow-ups, the Yellow Book, the Matchup Manual and Hat's Matchup Book many times. I have recently gone back through the threads in the old Hat Check Forum and several threads really kicked it in gear for me. The '8 Month Update' and the 'Minds Eye' threads.

After FINALLY following the exercises in the Minds Eye thread it is like it all started making sense. I am now seeing patterns and things I've never seen before. Running styles, E and OTE, FPLR, Power lines and actually matching horses. I realize the extreme importance of quieting the mind and not looking back at losing races to make the intuition of the Matchup work. I am still practicing but I am finding more winners and I AM HAVING FUN.

If you have not done so, I highly recommend that everyone serious about the Matchup read a book on intuition, entitled 'BLINK' by Malcolm Gladwell. I found it in my local library. With the exception of Hat's "thousands of races" experience, it comes close to explaining the Hat's uncanny abilities. Some of the Hat's teaching methods that you have so graciously passed on to us are paralleled in the first few chapters. They don't seem quite so nuts now.

Sorry for being so long winded. I just wanted to say Thanks for what you do.

PS: I am an Okie that used to live in the Cookson Hills of Eastern Oklahoma so I can relate to the Hat in alot of things. Just not his handicapping abilities.

Hi Pat
Reading your post makes me very happy. The "Mind's Eye" series of threads is the EXACT procedure and ORDER that Jim taught me his concepts.

The time frame of the threads is when Hat was very sick but had not told me. LeRoi told me after he passed that he did not want me worrying about him thereby distracting me from what he was teaching me.

The "Mind's Eye" series is Hat's final contribution to racing and gift to us. I was only the conduit.

I periodically read thru my follow ups and I just read an article that I haven't read in a while from F.U. 39 page 63. Psychological Success by Barry Meadow. Making serious money at this game involves just that..MAKING MONEY!!!! It's not about picking winners or being the best handicapper who ever lived. It's about finding small errors in the crowds line such as a bad fav or they underbet a horse u think has a decent chance to win..then acting. Luckily I've never had trouble passing races that either: (A) I had no opinion on or (B) my opinion matched the crowds so no bet was warrented. Betting horses is stressful, hard work, and not always fun but it is challenging & enlightening. To answer your question about how to go from betting small $$ to betting large $$ is simply a matter of attitude. Most people bet small, not because they can't afford to bet big, but because they fear losing. Frankly, u can't become a winner at this game unless
you're not afraid to lose. When u can lose a big bet and go on to the next race as if nothing extraordinary has happened, you're well on your way to becoming a winning player. I THINK YOU'VE DONE AN EXCELLENT JOB OF SUMMARIZING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES NECESSARY FOR SUCCESS AT THE RACETRACK. 1. Disipline..due to the high takeout most races offer little or no value., if u are betting 7 races a day somethings wrong. 2. Knowledge.. U have to be able to look at the tote and quickly determine who's overbet/underbet in each pool. 3. Acquision Motivation..if u are solely focused on profits, u won't have a problem passing marginal situations. If money is not your goal, then don't be surprised if u don't make much of it. 4. Courage This is a game of opinions, when yours doesn't match the crowds..IT'S SHOWTIME. If you are afraid to lose, you're probably afraid to win...these 4 principles can also be applied to other areas of investing such as the stock mkt., poker, real estate, among others. I hope this article helps everyone ..it helps me to read it and to keep it handy so that I don't forget to read it again!!!!!!!! Best to all...
