One REALLY appreciates the work ethic/hustle by A-Rod who is the games greatest player when you compare them to jerkoffs like MR.

Richie,Are you kidding?A Rod is one of the biggest prima donnas out there.I like in the All Star Game the last in Yankee Stadium he cuts out after the 6th inning.What's up with that s***?

As far as being the games greatest player my belief is when you call somebody that they better deliver the goods in clutch situations and he definitely isnt on the top of anyones list .

How can you argue against a guy who won 90 games as a starting pitcher and hit over 700 homers.

hey yens guys you passed over jay bay going to boston! he'll do real good there

we'll see as he has a lot of bats around him not so much in the burg. also, his BA is not good with runners in Pos. and as one fellow told me years ago "Shake a tree and watch those GLOVES fall out , but show me those RBI'S"

As far as work ethic and off field preparation A-Rod sets a standard VERY few can match big bro.

For me in todays game if I need a clutch hit to win a huge game and everything is on the line give me a healthy "Papi" Ortiz. This coming from a Yankee fan. He is unconscious.

Remains to be seen with Manny not in the lineup how it will affect Big Papi's numbers.

I will take Ted Williams not just on the field but off also. He volunteered to fly Marine fighter jets during Korean war when he could have stayed home with the Red Sox and made alot more than a fighter pilot. He also wasnt a bad hitter either as I recall

Alluding to what Richie mentioned about the attitude of the modern ballplayer; what gets to me is their play in 'The Contract Year.' Happens to some extent in all sports. A player gets a decent contract for x years and then under performs until the last year of the contract, then its gangbusters to get a bigger contract. Worse i guess is the guy who gets a big contract and tanks before the ink can dry.

I have a great story about Willie McCovey. After graduating from college and just before med school, I worked as a bell hop at the Marriott near the Astrodome. Most of the visiting teams stayed there. One night, I had to drive over to pick up a couple of kids whose parents had dropped them off at the game. As I was starting to drive away, a big dude carrying a Giants bag stopped me and asked for a ride to the Marriott and I let him in. That was unusual as the team provides transportation back to the hotel. Traffic was horrible so I strike up a conversation with the guy in the front seat and ask him if he was a player and what was his name. He responded and said "I am Wille McCovey." It turns out that he was due up in the 9th inning with the Giants trailing by one run and 2 outs and men on 1st and 2nd. The Astros had a left handed pitcher in and the manager decided to play the percentages and brought in a right hand batter(Mike Ivey I think) who proceeded to strike out on 3 pitches.

Mr McCovey said to me"It is frustrating when you know you can still play and they don't give you a chance. I am going to retire at the end of this roadtrip." He wound up retiring about 1 week later when the team got back to San Francisco. He was very classy despite being pi$$ed off.
