Bill,

I think we all know exactly how you feel.
We have all been there.

I have learned that to be a winner one must act like a winner and do what winners do.

And what do winners do?

All winners keep records of all races handicapped and every nickle of every race invested in.

It must be done just like a business, for that is what it is.

I was for years a professional janitor.
To be a professional janitor I had to act like a professional janitor.
I had to know which supplies were the best, what chemicals to use where and how.
I had to have the know how to clean a one desk office or a 17 floor office building or an entire college campus and the equipment to accomplish the task.
How to bid a jobs and do the follow up to get that a job.
I had to dress the part and to handle customer complaints.
I had to hire, train and fire employees.
None of it was easy.
But I had to make it look easy or I lost my edge with my employees, my customers and myself.

But the most important part was keeping records.
You have to know where you are at all times and where the money is going to or coming from.

In this business I have a desk, computer, printer and the best software there is.
I also have a 3 ring binder that has all my records in it.
I keep it with me when I am working, and yes I consider this work just the same as a job.
I didn't get every cleaning contract I bid on and I don't win every race I invest in.
I know from the start of every day that I am going to lose 30 to 40% of all wagers.
I have lost six out of eight two days in a row and I have won 22 out of 26, 14 of them in a row.
I study those records and mine them for information.
I try to know when the opposition is probably wrong.
For instance at Aqu. everybody believes that front runners win.
In the routes run recently yes thats half true. Med energy around 68.50 would not hurt you.
But the sprints are run mostly around 67.50 med. and the winner usually comes from off the pace.

Everybody gets discouraged.
Look to your records for the confidence and courage you need to do do the task at hand.

Some times a guy just needs to talk,
Bill you can call me at any time if you want to talk 24/7 except the hours when NY is running.
If I don't answer it means I am asleep and if I do answer it means I'm not asleep.
I love you and what you and others here have done for me.

May God Bless You,

Froggy

Great post,Froggy. And Bill,I understand how you feel.

I use Val4 and I make an odds line on my top 3 or 4 picks.I use the
Morning-Liner Ultimate money management program and I use a .20 partial
Kelly.I bet by dutching up to 3 and sometimes 4 horses depending on the
tote odds.I don't bet one or 2 horses anymore. This approach has really work
well for me because i don't encounter long losing streaks.I guess some may
not like this approach but there's different ways of betting.I just find it
comfortable for me.In regards to the Val4 odds line,I attach my own figures
to the top 3-5 horses and use Gordon Pine's Figline to make my own odds
line.It works fine for me.And I keep detailed records of my bets.

This is a very tough game and it's a real grind.Very few can do this for a
living and you will not get rich doing this. There's also nothing wrong if you
want to hold a full-time job and play the horses only as a hobby or recreation.
I guess it just depends on how far one wants to take it.

Good luck and have fun to y'all,
Ray

Thanks to the Feds rate cut I figure to lose a few grand in interest so I too am seeking to recover these lost funds and keep all the money. With that off my chest I do feel it is within reach to make enough from the track to pay off a few bills and put a side some money.Having a regular job on the side will keep the pressure off you and increase your chances of success.

Attitude is very important, if you have any doubts, you WILL fail, you have to have complete confidance in your self and your methods. You have to keep an even keel, win or lose a few bets keep your emotions in tact.If you lose a bunch of races in a row it means absolutely nothing, it only takes 1 race to turn a lossing day into a winning day.1 winning or Lossing day means nothing .It all will come out in the wash. Most people lose more than they SHOULD becouse they begin to panic when things do not go as expected. Accept the FACT that you can't predict every race, that this is a sport of probabilities, stuff happens stick to your guns till your time comes.

You need a handicapping tool that is reliable and repeatable with a great amount of consistancy. This will allow you to churn out small profits which can add up.

You must be consistant in how you approach your game, I never bought into the idea of approaching every race in a unique way. All the Pros that I know off have a very structured method. They approach every race with a great degree of structure, then after they have done their work( same steps over and over again ) then and only then do they use their intuition to read into the future.Structure Approach then Intuition = Success.

Betting....My opinion is to keep it simple . Flat win betting. If you have to spend time and mental energy (which is limited ) fussing on structuring some exotic bet you will have taken away some of your INTUITIVE ENERGY which is necessary in your handicapping. We all get mentally tired at some point so use your mental energy with care.

To one of Froggy's very good points which he's been following since his "losing day" at AQU, there is an article in the very first FU by Jerri Lincoln on p.18. This was still the time when there was no parimutuel wagering outside the track and she had to deal with the race books. She didn't give a ton of numerical detail (roi, etc.) but her point is well taken.

In 20 years, I have not always treated the process as a business but that will change.

If you are a one-horse or two-horse bettor, the toughest part of the game is
dealing with losing streaks. It's so frustrating that i used to go from one
computer program to another.Zig-zagging on my picks and trying to keep
up on whether early or late pace, and what other factors were winning...

And because i play in the sportsbook here in Reno, there's that feeling of
being so alone. It's lonely.I keep to myself because of the 'negative'
connotations that people think if i tell them what i do..."It's gambling","it's
evil","all horse players die broke","you can't beat this game","why can't you
work a regular job"...It's also hard to get close to anyone.I have to turn off
and bring my notebook computer to the clerk counter when i make my bets
because one time,my computer was stolen when i entrusted it to someone
who i thought i can trust.It's very tough...emotionally,mentally and
physically. That's the reason a lot of the very best handicappers have left or
don't play the game anymore. One example is Dick Schmidt.I heard that he's
now into commodities trading. He used to be one of the heavy players i've
ever seen...

Ray,

I sympathize with what you go thru at the book.

At first I was being laughed at behind my back by the people behind the counter when I was betting $4 a race on two horses and then they both lost.
There were plenty of comments like "how can you win betting like that".

Then some of my old poker room friends chided me because I wasn't trying to score the "Big Twin Q" and make a bundle like they were.

It is a lonley way to go but I feel good when I walk out with more than I walked in with and they are all still there trying to score.

I don't have the pp's but I'm almost in tears for you. I won't say anything because there's nothing that can be said, except, I've been there before.

Ouch, that must hurt.

Exoctics take more energy and seem to be more devestating on the mentality.

Getting that 2nd place and 3rd place horse in order is a b@#%h.

Most of them usually comes from left field or out the grave. I don't like'em.

Financial Security is a worthy and almost necessary pursuit, whether its ever achieved or not.

Having a JOB in the 21st century and beyond is no guarantee of anything anymore.

Having a JOB (Just Over Broke) is like being on Death Row for 20 years, each day , hour ,minute and second, your time is come to get the axe, with nothing to show for it in return .

Despite whatever b.s. the company spews, they are looking to outsource your position, which means more bucks in their pocket, believe that.

Profits rule, and if they can get a ridiculous percentage of net profit well beyond 100% , all the better.

If they already get 1500% profit and theres a possibility of getting 3000% profit, you are gone, you and your 25 year service watch, adios.

They are going to continue to outsource, no matter what or who the f@#k
is in the admin or president, even if new technology is created, the patents are already being packaged and ready for India, China or somebody in the jungle that 2 cents an hour seems like a LOT of money. Cash rules.

When the stock market crashed in 1929, at least America was #1 in technology, #1 in selling products and export, #1 in manufacturing which probably pulled this country out the hole.

If it crashes like that again, what's going to pull America out?

The Trillions in debt , exports, failing banks, political and corporate embezzlement of the Treasury, or falling dollar?

Welcome to Armaggedon.
