I've also bet on three horses and once in awhile all four of my contenders
in a turf race, because of the high odds on all my contenders. On occasions like this,i stay in the sportsbook and use my notebook computer with my dutching software.Making a profit is the name of the game. |

Ray, I was curious. I use a program called "HedgeHog" which has the ability to Dutch or hedge as many contenders as you may want in a race. You can also set the percentage you are looking to get as a return in a race. What program do you use? What percentage of your investment in a race are you looking to get back in a given race? Do you Dutch evenly or proportionally. Do you hedge as well. Share with the group. Tell us your approach. |

Ok,Partsnut...Since my specialty is the turf route and i can narrow the win
contenders down to four most of the time. After i've analyze dozens of turf races,i've found out that on occasions that those 4 horses went off at good odds(more than 3-1,at least),i could have made money just betting all of them ...I have a good bankroll and content on making a $100 profit per playable turf race.Let's say the odds on my picks were 10-1,8-1,6-1,and 4-1...My dutching software(a computer friend made this simple program for me) tells me how much to bet on each one... 10-1= $20 8-1= $24 6-1= $31 4-1= $44 whichever horse wins,i make a $100 profit...for an investment of less than $150...just make sure that you have set aside a good bankroll.I started small and since suffering that 17 straight losing streak betting on two horse,i've never had a losing streak longer than three, betting 4 horses...i pass if the odds on one of my four picks is less than 3-1...I'm really patient and pick my spots...i'm not a math whiz and i'm sure some of you can maximize your profit...but this works for me really well... |

I use the horse best turf line in it's pp's and not going more than a year old.
I look closely in the late pace potential and deceleration screens using Spand. I've kept it simple and if i have two strong win contenders,i dutch them both...if i have three,i bet three...and if i have four,i'll bet all four. So,i have gone beyond the two-horse betting because why limit your profit potential if you can make money betting more than two horses... |

Ray,
Love your posts. You say you enter the best turf line < 1 year. How do you decide on contenders ? Is this decision based upon the software or do you decide on contenders prior to selecting the lines ? |

Hello Ray
I am a little confused and jealous I'm reading that you look for $100 dollars a day profit Is this correct? Ok if so in your example in the above turf race you bet $20, $24, $31 $44 on your four win bets $149 dollars .. If you happened to lose the race is that it for the day? or now do you bet to make $100 profit plus replace the $150 you lost ? Can you help me I always figured if I went full time I would just bet in 20 race cycles , my ROI says I could do it but my bankroll is too small to bet enough per race to make much money As soon as I am out of some personal obligations I will work on increaseing my bet size Bill |

Hi Bill,
That 4-horse bet(or 3 horses) for $100 target-profit was for one race only. I usually find 1-2 races like that a day and more on weekends on the tracks i play.I don't double-up after a loss like those due-dutch betting like some bettors.I've been pretty good in picking win contenders and i'm sure most of the people in this group are. Before,i'll get so frustrated when i picked 4 horses and was just betting 2 horses because that was what the Doc suggested and followed by the group. It took me awhile to realize that if the odds are right, why not bet all my win contenders and make a profit? After playing the game for awhile now,i'm sure many of us can narrow the field down to 3 or 4 horses, and many get so frustrated after betting 2 horses and losing, and then finding that one of the other 2 horses that they didn't bet win.I too envied those "expert" handicappers i've read in books and thought that i'll never be able to achieve their success...but i've found what works for me.I'm not an expert handicapper and i've some friends in the sportsbook who are better handicappers, but they're still struggling to make a profit.I just keep a low profile here at the racebook of the Grand Sierra Casino(former Reno Hilton) ... |

Sorry,Bill.I forgot to answer your second question.I started betting small
amounts because i took a two month vacation at the end of 2005.I just started with $3000 and was just betting to make a $20 profit per turf race where my strength is...It was tough at first but i made some money...made mistakes and learn as i go...suffered through that 17 losing streak, before i found out that betting more than 2 horses is better and easier on my psyche. |
