Par Times

I was thinking of buying PAR Times. That is an area I need to improve, at least I think I do. Other tracks throw in yet another kink in a race, for me.
Some tracks are faster and some slower. I am lost when it comes to each track. Is that a more advance approach or should I look into it. I Looking for some advice.
Thanks

Par Times

You don't need to pay for par times if you are simply looking for the differences in track speeds between various tracks. Go to http://www.americanturf.com/equalization/ where they have an equalization chart for all tracks, which is updated yearly. Can come in very handy. Another thing you can do is check out http://www.drf.com/events/3-year-best-time-chart for a DRF 3 yr best times chart for the various tracks. I personally prefer the chart from American Turf Monthly.
On the other hand, you can also make up your own par charts for your favorite track(s). It's a LOT of work, but also teaches you a lot about how horses at different levels run.

Thanks That's great, I do keep a record at my home track. I do a few of them. It is a lot of work, this will help me out. Thanks, What would be the advantage of having the Par times? Is it that you have the Pace numbers for each race?

Find the winners

I agree with Joefour

Its a lot of work but very rewarding, I started to pay attention to the pace of race,
because its written about in the Pace line and Red Match Up manual.

What turned out to be something for pace line contender selection,
Is now grown to something like par times

It really can be as simple to start by just looking at horses from the track you play
and recording the pace of race times from the winners PP's when it runs a + race at that track distance and surface.

Par Charts

What is your favorite track? Two outfits sell them right now that I know of. One sells individual charts (limited selection) and the other bunch makes you buy a whole book for all the tracks (expensive). The trouble with par charts is that they are going to CHANGE over time. That's why these guys come out with new editions every year. It can run into some serious money if you want to stay up to date.
If you want to do your own, you will have to plot out all the class levels of races at your track, then you will have to take the trouble to go back through all the results charts at Equibase or Brisnet and start averaging times for each level. Another (and easier) way is if you have a stack of DRF's you can mine the info off of. A good primer on this can be found in Tom Brohammer's book.

Thanks, My home track is LRL and PIM, and I have been keeping a track profile of my home tracks. If I am starting new somewhere, or want to do a stakes race, I have nothing to go by. I have been reading Modern Pace its more of a workbook than a book to read. I think sometimes its number overload, but I have been staying with it. Thanks for the help.

Who sells the limited / less expensive charts?

Thanks

I notice the Par number printed at the top of every Trackmaster premium or platinum PP form they send me for race of the week, but I don't see anything like that in the files downloaded into RDSS. Is the PAR number automatically integrated into the calculations, am I overlooking it, or are we doing without it?

Appy,

Don't worry about the Par time number - if you use RDSS you don't need it. What you need are original running times equalized to today's distance, adjusted by Inter Track and Daily Track variants. Which is what you get on the Adjusted Screen. Which is the source of Velocity calculations. Which get compounded into the Primary Factors and the other aggregate factors such as BL/BL, VDC etc. Which is the source of Early/Late analysis, etc, etc.

It's more important to spend precious time understanding how to interpret the various readouts, how to identify true contenders, how to consistently pick pacelines, how to know when Early horses will prevail and when they will be depleted - than it is to worry about the mechanics of how times run by different horses on different distances/surfaces are adjusted to a 'par' for today's distance/surface. That work is already done for you, courtesy of TrackMaster's ITVs and RDSS' suite of adjustments.

Ted
