Who Are You

I recently got a PM from a fellow pace and cap member
I replied to him but I wanted to elaborate here. I read and reply to as many PMs as I can. I apologize to anyone if I might have missed yours
But I read them all. I love to share with as many people as I can. If I write to one person in a PM its read by 1 person. I feel there are many people who ask the same question to themselves so why not answer to all.
My reply to the member
This is who I am ..
Dear X

I asked you for help. I am not a handicapper . I follow Docs guidelines to the best of my ability. I am not a master of the game. I don't know the history of handicapping and the complete history of Doc Sartin
I know what I was taught by Doc Sartin. I have no great database with precise details of thousands of race results and patterns. I have a bunch of 20 race wager decision forms filled in by hand with pen and paper
I miss the winner But sometimes thats a good thing because I hid it from my readouts because it was not a good bet. and thats based on what Doc taught me I have the winner between 8 and 12 times
with an average mutual of 9.60 on these 20 race cycles that has been true
for the past 14 years I have slipped a bit. to the percentage that I told you about which is about 36 percent betting two horses thats based on my recent 60 races. I know I can do better but facts are thats were I am in this
set of cycles. Am I were I want to be NO But The methodology is not the problem The problem is in me. For years I asked Doc how I can get better
He told me Don't handicap, Just do exactly what your doing. However he did say that in some point in every 20 race cycles there will be some race were
you will go off course. Nobody who bets races will ever win them all, stuff happens we are all human beings. The greatest athletes fail at times But If you can eliminate the small errors and stay on course you will do great

But I fail now and then. I fail because I have my own ego and fears. I am like many people. I should win more than I do.But I fail because I lose focus I do my work, I know what to do . I know if I do as Doc says
I will win. I could win a lot.
Somebody we all know and love here at Pace and Cap, a brilliant man who I look up to with great regard and love. A business
man, a leader a highly intelligent man. and mostly a man I confide to recently
asked me , or rather stated "you should bet professionally"
why are you driving a truck" My answer to this question is Until recently I felt it would be irresponsible to risk my income with 2 sons in college,
child support payments, and a IRS tax levy from a failed business and tons of credit card dept from the same failed business
I put myself in a bad place I had to make the call to either pay uncle sam or pay my employees
I made the wrong decision on that one and the business failed anyway.
None of my employees ever missed a payroll check. I gave them all notice I closed the doors Many of them still contact me and say that was a nice company and they wish we were all still together.

I was in ruin that was in 1995 two years before I ever heard of the methodology. I worked my way completely out of that hole
Both my sons have finished college Alex from Rutgers with a sports management degree and Ben from The College of New Jersey with a Finance degree
I have finished my child support obligations and I have a current balance on
1 credit card of $251 dollars In 1995 I was over $200000 dollars in total dept
After my business failed I went to work for a small printer it was at this time
when I started to talk to Doc I only had a $50 bank roll I used every penny
of my check to pay the credit cards lawyers fees child support living expense
and personal loans to my brother and sister and mother.
All I had left over each week was the $50 bill my boss would hand me
that nobody was suppose to know about. It was his gift to me. I would
only be able to bet $4 a race $2 per horse for a very long time
But I got better.
That small printer employed me till 2009 when it to when out of business
At this point in my life I was unable to get a new job in printing as the industry had shrunk and changed because of computers
I also had very little extra money Because in 2001 shortly after I visited Doc Sartin I started my own messenger service. The extra money from the part
time Messenger service helped me get out of dept and I could bet a little more but I hardly did.
Pace and Cap developed and ran it with donations and money out of my pocket and with winning races. When the printer closed I lost my medical
insurance I needed to work because of my sons
I had missed out on a lot cause the whole time I was in dept I never got to
travel much except to go see Doc and Jim Bradshaw in Oklahoma
I wanted to see the country so I went to driving school and got my CDL
I love to drive my 18 wheel rig I enjoy what I do .I can set my own route
and I take it easy and the company I work for pays well and has great benifits medical vision dental life. I drive over night I wake up in the early afternoon and I can bet all day and the early races at night tracks
plus I can put my conditional bets in and check the results on breaks
later .

I will bet full time soon I'm still in love with driving around in my truck
when It happens it will happen But I dont feel and desire to bet for a living
It does not seem that fun

Anyway what this all means is I am Bill
I am not very good in your eyes but I am in mine

Bill

Bill, you take my breath away. How can you say you are not very good in our eyes. All the setbacks you have overcome are much more than most people could or would do. You are a caring and loving person and your teaching on here is of tremendous value to all. I'm sure you will hear this from a lot more people.
You have given and will continue to give a great deal to all here. My hat's off to you my friend, and you are my friend. Keep on trucking until you are ready, but please, please don't ever put yourself down.
Barb

Bill,

A lot of men would have quit on life when they had a mountain of debt and a suitcase full of problems as you did.
I see them everyday here in the casino and race book.
I belive you are a real man.
One worth knowing.
You are one of my heros.

I read this post on my phone at work and couldn't wait to get home to log in to post my thoughts.

What a poignant posting.

Anyone who can put his staff before himself when facing the personal fall out of doing so doesn't have to justify himself to anyone in my humble opinion.

If ever there was a measure of the man this was it. (not meant in a sexist way for female readers! You know what I mean)

To have maintained enough equanimity though out this to get your kids through college and also be in the position where you could bet full time, but choose to follow your own path says everything.

I'll be using this thread as inspiration definitely. Thanks for sharing such a personal part of your life.

Now you know

Thank you Barb David Scott Dave and Froggy

Yes and he might not like me posting this but
All along the way I always had my friend Richie to help me and make me laugh
even though I cried so often
When he went away things really feel apart
and I slid back

Then one day he came home

It all started with "can you help me"

Bill as a fellow trucker, 1 who you personally has helped unselfishly so many times , may I say thank you again and again.

As stated already you are a Man among Men, your life tough as it has been, you stood up and dealt with it head on, a tremndous accomplishment, you know this, and now we do too and all those you have dealt with know this, if honor and intergrity are your faults, then you my friend are a rare individual indeed, and here in this community there are many different , and wonderful people, which you Sir are included as such, never , ever doubt that.

As for your job , well I understand the pull it has on you, but at least you work for a good company that makes you happy and in this business that is hard to do, so do as you feel till it feels like time to move on, till then keep it safe and always drive slow and careful, ya never know what is around the next corner...but 1 thing is for sure you ccan handle it
