M4$ CAP! Yes/No

Quote:
The person picking just one horse (like Capcondo's win yesterday)should be rewarded by a double payoff vs. the majority of the players who are betting 2 choices.

Is that how it is being scored??
I received the above question by PM today from a non-player. In case there are others wondering about scoring here was my response:

It is a moot point. This is the beauty of scoring by ROI.
Capcondo put up one unit. He gets 3 units returned for a profit of 2 units or an ROI of 200%. If he had put up 2 units to cover 2 choices and was returned 3 units for a profit of 1 unit that would be an ROI of 50%.

200% vs 50% pushes you up a lot a quicker when you hit. Capcondo and PeteC play mostly singles so they have much less drag. Personal choice really. There is no extra figuring for me. It is all built in. FYI I have a simple macro programmed into a spreadsheet which computes all this for me. Takes me 10 minutes a week to enter the data.

Anyhow the above got me thinking that the contest is a little vulnerable to an out of skew payoff which could put someone out of reach and make interest wane early. It was suggested last year by someone that a $20 win payoff cap be in place to deal with that scenario. I responded that with such a long contest of 80 or so events it wasn't necessary. And it worked out.

We are in a different place this year with 20 events of which there are only ten left. Plus we are dealing in real money and I want this to be as fair as we can make it. I think it should have been in place from the beginning but no harm done so far. I may not be in the majority however.

So I am asking for the opinion of current players only. Reply to this thread by Thursday evening April 7 with your response:

Yes a cap of $20. (suggest a different amount if you wish)

or

No cap. Remains the same.

I will send a PM to the nine other players to notify them to answer to this thread so everybody can see the responses. By Friday morning before the next contest it will be apparent which way we will go. Majority rules. A tie leaves things as is. A Yes Cap majority will use the average of everyones cap suggestion if other than $20.

Thanks,
Pook

I am fine keeping it the way it is, no cap. If someone hits a big one....congratulations to them.....

Pook,

I was the one who wrote to you last year about a 20/1 cap. I would be fine with that IF this was the beginning of the contest. But, it's not.

If you put on a cap now, you hurt the chances of those near the bottom of the standings. For future contests, it's worth considering.

I think it is unfair to change the rules in the middle of the contest. I vote no cap
