Happy birthday Howard G. Sartin
Today would be my Grandfathers 83rd Birthday! I know he is so happy to look down and know that he has touched so many of you. My family and I will have cake and light a candle in his memory. I believe that it is when we stop celebrating life that we die. My grandfather will live on. I am sure he is celebrating up there as well.
This has been a tough year, and I'm sure will be a bittersweet day. I want to thank you all again for kind words.. And all that you have done to preserve the memory and legacy of my beloved grandpa. Especially you Bill.. And you Ted. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!! |

I will raise my glass to toast your grandpa today Maryanne. It was such a pleasure to meet you and I'm sure your grandpa is looking down and is very proud of you. You touched the hearts of all of us who met you in Saratoga.
I will be thinking of you and all your family today. May God bless you all. Barb

I remember calling Howard today, last year, really just to wish him the best but he wouldn't let me off the phone! We talked for an hour, mostly chit chat, our families, a few people we knew in common, a bit about racing. (He spoke glowingly of Mariana).
Although I recall occasionally back in the day the odd unvarnished response to a few of my ramblings (and certainly read his published words sometimes telling it like he saw it), in later years, on the phone connecting us north-east to south-west, he was the most delightful and generous man I have ever known, always greeting me with warmth and kindness even though Mary would sometimes say he had had a bad night. I miss him, and thank you Mariana for helping us remember the personal side of such a great man and mentor. Ted

Thanks Guys..
Tonight was nice. My grandmother and I had dinner.. and then birthday cake. I remember last year I got him a cake and the Icing had so much food coloring in it it turned his lips and his tongue blue for a few days. I look forward to meeting up with all of you again soon!!! Barb... "Tuesdays with Morrie" is one of my all time favorite books.. I keep it by my bed side. If I ever start to feel sorry for myself or like I cant do something.. I open that book. What an inspiration that man was!!! |

I'm glad I'm not the only one Maryanne. I do the same. If everyone looked t life the way he did, what a world it would be!

A belated happy b-day to The Doc, a man I'll always admire and respect! Though we've never met, I feel as if I know him well, like a good friend, thanks to issues of the Follow Up and various PIRCO manuals and tapes.
All the best, Jon P.S. Whatever became of Shane Sartin?
