reinstall rdss

Ted,

I had to uninstall & reinstall rdss, for some reason.
That went fine, but I have lost all my 2008 downloads.
The only thing that shows up ar 2007 files.
Is there someway to recover the 2008 files?
Thank you

Tom,

Did you lose the 2008 ZIP files which RDSS downloaded from TrackMaster, or did you lose your database into which those downloaded race cards were loaded (Converted)?

Look for this folder: c:\rdss\data\PP\2008\ Do you see a list of folders there with track code names (e.g. AP, BEL, CD...ZIA)? Go into one of those folders. Do you see race card ZIP files with names like: bel20081004rdss.zip ? If so, you did not lose your downloaded 2008 files. There they are.

When you uninstalled RDSS, the uninstall process would have asked the question (something like): "Do you want to remove the read-only file c:\rdss\data\data.db?" This is the RDSS database file where all race cards are converted so you can work with them. If you say: "YES, delete the file" (the database), then the Converted (2008) race cards stored in the database are gone because the database file (data.db) was deleted. When you reinstalled RDSS, a fresh database (data.db file) is installed, which contains sample races from 2007.

To retrieve your previous database, you can try 2 things:

1. look in your Recycle bin for files recently deleted from the RDSS folder (and the \rdss\data\ folder). Look for c:\rdss\data\data.db and restore that file, overwriting the fresh data.db file you re-installed.

2. If #1 didn't work, hopefully you have a recent backup of your computer hard drive. If so, restore that recent backup of c:\rdss\data\data.db and you're in business. If you have no backups, but if you do have all the data files you downloaded from TrackMaster (2nd paragraph, above), you can Convert them all again to your fresh database with a utility I have as part of RDSS which I'll have to explain further to you if this is what you need. Unfortunately, any pacelines choices you made for races you handicapped will not be remembered.

Let me know Tom.

Ted

P.S. Daily backups are a REALLY good idea! (Ask me how I know...)

Will a system restore work in this regard?

If you mean restore the Operating System (i.e. Windows) from a backup, it's a bit of overkill to just get one file back.

?

No, not from a backup. Just do a system restore going back 1 day or however many days ago you lost the file. I've gotten back deleted or lost information this way in the past.

I don't know if it will work in the case of the information lost in this situation, which is why I proffered it as a solution.
