Cailf. racing.
This article does not bode well for SA or racing in California.

I did read somewhere that PETA is trying to get enough signatures to have a ballot measure to eliminate racing in California. If they are successful, I believe it would have a good chance of passing.

Races with 4 horses? That's nuts. I just looked at the charts from yesterday's races at Del Mar. Race 1, with 4 horses, had a WPS pool of $62 thousand. How can you keep a track open with that kind of money? Race 3 had 6 horses. The horses that finished 5th and 6th got purse money of $351. Would it make sense for a trainer with a horse coming up to a race to toss it into a 4 horse field, especially a short sprint, and get paid $351 for a work-out? |

Yes
Hi Mike B
Great points Also besides the ridiculously short fields. One thing I have noticed is races for male horses must to be roughly 90% geldings Where are all the horses suppose to come from? Cal racing is all about making Owners and Trainers happy NOW It is becoming clearer all the time. The owners and trainers realize the end is near for Socal racing. So they geld every horse for an advantage. Then they keep the fields small so everybody gets paid. Since the track, the trainers and the owners all seem to want only to win now it is inevitable |

It would be interesting to see the betting handle broken down between on and off track. Going to the track is a social event for a lot of those attending SA and Del Mar. Short fields aren't going to affect those people as much as it will turn off the simulcast bettors who have many options, and don't care about the food and the drinks and the sun shine. |

I think winter racing at SA will be dismal this year, with short dirt fields.
I am looking for Oaklawn to really set records this year, with "Hammer" working there now. His connections with horsemen will hopefully bring a lot of horses in to fill cards. No turf, but this could be a big deal for them. |

I agree Tom with short fields etc. at SA this winter meet. I think the time would be better spent switching to a Tapeda type syn. track.
Oaklawn is always a challenging meet with full fields, many shippers and very good racing. Prices also tend to be good with bigger fields and most have trouble getting a handle on the racing there. Yes a meet to look forward to. I also like Tampa and GP during the winter. Mitch44 Last edited by Mitch44; 11-17-2019 at 10:05 AM. |
