Question Layoff ?

Why would claim a horse only to lay it off however it won it's last three races?

I could be wrong (of course) --but aren't claims put in prior to the race if so --maybe the horse came back to the barn a little bit lame.

and while the horse may win --he looks to me like this may be a race to give her a workout before stretching back out ...

Hi

Hi Terry

Here is Mad's Sept 16th PP This is the race M. Moore made the claim from M.Pino. M,Pino had a nice filly but after a 6 week break dropped her down to
a 5000 claimer She walked to a easy win at .70cents but nobody claimed her.
Then M.Pino moved her "up" to $8000 She won again and M. Moore figured
he could use a $5000-$8000 horse Oh by the way they do run Starter 5000
races at Parx so now M. Moore has a eligible horse for those races

Now why the layoff ? I don't know but It does not look good on paper

Today's race ? M. Moore has no wins training 4+F at 7 furlongs since 1/1/13
So this distance on the come back could look like a just a prep.

In my 114 race database for 4 + F going 7 furlongs at Parx
there have only been 2 winners who are off over a 90 day layoff
2 out of 114

The two long layoff horses were off 222 and 360 days all other 112 winners were returning in less than 82 days

The #1 post has had 20 winners in the 114 races by far the best

Today's race is for non winners of a race in 6 months so its not the greatest field

Thanks Guys.

I wasn't going to bet the 4 Bill, as you know layoffs are typically not a good bet (unless the horses name is Central Banker ).

Winner

Hi Terry

The 4 ran 3rd. I know, and believe me its always the 4 horse

The winner also was cutting back, The difference is the winner is back in 10 days. The class of this race is CL5000 non winners of 1 race in 6 months
The race class is 84 whicj is average for Parx BUT the condition and the purse
and claiming price makes it a bottom level race There is nothing lower at parx
except the state bred version of this condition. There are a few horse in this race who are stuck here at this level The winner has a (+) line 10 days ago but has been running against much better
Class and form are important at this level

FYI...Follow up #81 pg 34-35 ...Doc discusses layoffs...He says in order to be a valid contender a long layoff horse should rank no worse than #3 after hides...I look at the pp's to see if they have done it before....Centre Court won at GP last saturday with a 203 day L.O....had the field totally outclassed ...this happens often enough that I pay close attention to it.........keep records!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
