Originally, I left Hence off this list because he had not won or placed in a Grade 1 or 2 race.
He ran positionally 10-10-4-1 to the stretch call and gained lengths from 11.25-4.50-1.50, but his last 3 furlong closing time was only 37.58. He might have the lead after six furlongs, his 110.52 vs AD 110.95, but stretch call times do not favor him 135.71 vs 134.94, which affirms the slower finishing time. On the other hand, he could have been geared down as he beat the 2nd place horse by 3.75 lengths - so he could have more in the tank and could inprove as well. The bright green shows significant position and lengths moves from the half mile to the stretch. This screen shot was sorted by fastest stretch call so we can see who is closest to the pace at the mile marker (columns headed STR and LB4) |
