Virus Total

This post does not pertain to horseracing per se, but we're all using computers to run RDSS and must be ever vigilant about computer viruses. I've just had to rebuild my Windows 10 computer because a virus wiped out the Master Boot Record. During the ordeal of reinstalling Windows and all the software and restoring the documents and data, I found this great website called VirusTotal.

https://www.virustotal.com/#/home/upload

Assume you've downloaded an .exe file from an unfamiliar website and you're uneasy about clicking that install button. Just call up VirusTotal, give it the location of the file and it will run dozens of virus checks. I could have saved myself about 8 hours of misery if I had used it.

Hey Mick, were you running updated Windows defender on the Win10 machine?

I have been using that for three years on my Win10 stuff and have never had problems with anything of that nature. just curious if something got past it.

Thanks

Hi, Bill.

I was running Windows Defender but the fault was mine, solely mine. I wanted a chess game for my computer. I liked Chess Titans on Windows 7, which is not on Windows 10. I found a program with that name on a download site I thought was reputable, downloaded "chesstitans.exe" and clicked install. Bad mistake.

In addition to half a dozen adware and malware programs, chesstitans.exe also installed a nasty thing called "s.exe" which destroyed my Master Boot Record. With no Boot Record, no boot. Besides, I had no idea what else the virus might have done. So, a complete reformat and reinstallation was in order.

I eventually found the old Windows 7 games, including Chess Titans, patched for Windows 10, but I made sure to run Virus Total on the installation file to make sure it was clean.

I'm somewhat computer savvy and know that the Internet is like the Wild, Wild West with everything good and bad out there. But I let my guard down and gosh, did I pay for it.

Thanks Mick. i have been using MS defender for several years and it works great I was worried somehow it might have failed.

Like you I have learned the hard way about downloading "free stuff" on the internet. Nothing is free on the internet...just like the rest of life. Your gonna pay one way or another......
