Charting the exacta board
This is my way of charting the exacta board. I also use Al Illich’s proportionate odds method for tracking the smart money in the 2nd half of the doubles. If I see a horse with Al’s method, it makes my life easier, otherwise I just chart the exactas. Don’t think of this as redboarding but as a learning tool.
If u use Al’s daily double method of proportionate odds(po) and u eliminate the two chalk double horses, the 3-12, u wind up with the 6. The (po) on the 3 was 12, on the 12 was 4. On the 6 it was a 5 which was 4 points lower than the #4&9 which was a 9. Looking at the exacta board and reading down on 6 we see 12-6 is $81 and 3-6 is $139, the two lowest exactas. Cross checking with the 2-9, the lowest exactas with the 3-12, they also could be covered with the 6 horse. 6 ran second to the 3 and capped a $139 exacta and paid $15.20 to place, going off at 22-1. EZ money. No handicapping the race necessary. I threw the pp’s for the 6 horse to show in all his races he goes off at boxcar odds but today takes money in the doubles ??? This is much easier than reading the pp’s in a race taken off the turf for maidens. Looking at the exactas my way, using the 12 horse which was the favorite, I look at the 4-5 smallest exactas. I threw in the 6 because he was Al’s pick.
If your not familiar with Al’s method, you divide the doubles by the morning line of the horses to get the proportionate odds (po) or ratio. You eliminate the two favorite double horses, no value on them to win but if you have a key horse which is a price, like was the case in this race, then I would still use them in an exacta box. You then look at the horse with the lowest (po), in this case the #6 which is a 5 and if it’s lower by 4 points or more to the next horse, in this case a 9, then it’s a play. Omar |

I should’ve mentioned one more thing about Al’s method, any proportionate odds that are higher than 20, are to be discarded and not played.

One more thing about Race 10 at Saratoga on Sunday. If you look at the doubles you’ll see that 4 is $264. The 1 is $354 and the 6 $223 now it stands to reason that in the exacta, the four and the six should be close in price, but they weren’t. If you look at the 4 he was $179 exacta with the 12, if you look at the one he was $153 exacta with the 12, but with the six he was an $81 exacta with the 12. That also tells me he was taking an unusual amount of money in the exactas as well as in the double.
You have to forgive me for writing in pieces as I’m still in rehab and keep getting interrupted. Omar |

But you won’t find my exacta method in any book (unless I write another one) other than here, it’s my culmination of board watching for 45+ years, not to mention 2 years straight charting without looking at pp’s, just charting the exactas, doubles and odds, back in 1978-79.

I've used Al's method for 25 years now with good success.
