If only it were the exception...
Some years ago, at our local oval, about 200 hundred of us were waiting for the official photo finish to be posted of a just concluded race, that by itself was unusal, in most cases there would be three or four interested parties. What drew this interest was the horse who the track posted as the winner was clearly second, it wasn't even close. To his credit the gentleman who posted the photo was willing to entertain questions from this group of disgruntled fans, what he was unable to do, was answer persuasively.
After he explained to us how the photo systems was fail safe and used a second camera as a back-up, he assumed his task was complete. I was also offered a tour of the the both where they worked their trade. I thanked him but said no thank you, I already knew how their system worked. What I wanted to know was why the photo that had us so upset was taken from a different perspective than all the other winning photos. In our photo the horses were all 2 inches high, in all the others, they measured 4 inches. Now I knew why, but he could only offer double talk. I then asked why there was no mirror image in our photo, while all the others had it. This really confused him. So I answered for him. The photo they posted was accurate, unfortunately it was taken after the finish line. Larceny, incompetance, who knows? Though this I do know, management had no interest in following up; I believe their attention was focussed on stall allocations or Saturday;s Ostrich races. And it goes on and on and on. Enjoyed the article and nothing in it surprised me. thanks, chris |
