Voodoo,
we play horses the way we think is best suitable to our needs. The Tam race didn't hurt me, actually I learned from it, next time I will reverse the investment. |

Next Time someone gives you this line of bull, ask them how they are doing with their 401 k, as soon as they get done with their answer reply back to them that the STOCK MARKET is gambling, its evil, eventually you will go broke, you can't beat a crooked market , get a regular job. After you say this look at the stupid expression on their face. A hyprocrite never likes to be exposed. Mike. |

A Regular Job?
I have heard many times the exact same thing that ray lopez was talking about. My experience has been that "Horse Handicapper's" not "Horseplayers" are more knowledgeable as a group than many of the other professions.
Yes, it is a profession despite what other people may tell you. I gave up trying to justify or explain why I choose to handicap horses as it just leads to much frustration and aggravation. Also I might say that as a group "Horse Handicappers" have always been to me the most genuine, hard-working, and interesting people I have met. That is why I used to really enjoyed attending Doc Sartin's seminars when I was able to. Some people don't know what they are missing. I think you only go around once in life and you might as well do something you really enjoy. Life is too short otherwise. |

Which is easier?
There is this assumption that making your living at the race track is one of the most difficult occupations , is this necessarly the truth. Being a Pro better may not exactly guarantee you finiancial security but neither does being an employee or an employer.
There are not too many areas of employment which can not be outsourced , also being your own boss has no guarantees of future profits. Anyone who thinks it is easy to run a business has NO idea. I have been my own boss for 18 years, my revenue fluctuates every year , I hope to be in business for many more years but I live with a sence of insecurity. My business could fold up anytime, alot of it is beyond my control. The vast majority of times I lost a client was becouse my client could no longer afford my services. I.E. There is no such thing as financial security you just have to keep doing what is necessary to get thru life one day at a time and hope for the best. Mike. |

I think a person who wins with some consistency long-term at the races is not unlike a great ballplayer or recording artist. They work very hard perfecting their craft, but they also possess natural talent. Not everyone who would like to do it is cut out for it. Jim |

Jim.
If a person has a method that is consistant in churning out a profit, then making a living at the track shouldn't be that difficult. The key is developing this method and having extreme discipline applying this method while exhibiting all the emotions of a robot.Even if only 5 % of the betting public makes consistant profits there is no outside force that can prevent you from becomming one of the fortunate 5 %. I just hope that I will become one of the 5 %. Breaking even I can do in my sleep, the last couple years spending 5 minutes max on a race I have done this.I will admit that I am suffering from some mental block that causes me to make 2 or 3 key mistakes which disolves my making a profit, most of the time my mistakes are on my higher rated horses with clear late or early advantages. Mike. |

Out west a lot of full time jobs don't have health ins.
I never provided it for myself or my employees. When I was in my early twenties and worked for Boeing I had it then. I've never had any insurance since then until Medicare picked me up at age 65 and now that costs me almost $100 a month. I paid for medical care up front or on time payments or I just never went to the doctor. Mike if you are having trouble with key strokes get RDSS and then that problem will be gone. Being a full timer in this business requires the ability to drive yourself and the self control to accept the percentage of your edge and not go for the big score. Look at the casinos. They are getting rich off of people trying to score. Meanwhile only a few do hit a good one and then give it back going for the next one. Banks and mortgage companies make it big while playing it safe and not investing in high yield high risk investments. The Investment banks that are now going under got greedy and wanted those high interest high risk mortgages. A salesman starts out every morning out of work. The hot dog vendor is out of work if he doesn't go out and do what is necessary every day. With an employer someone tells you what to do, how to do it, when to do it, how much and when you are going to get paid. Become your own employer and tell yourself what to do and how to do it and when to do it. Get paid for what you are worth. A lot of big companies got started when somebody got laid off and had to go it alone. When I sold my janitorial company to a large corporation, they told me they needed me to stay on for a year and help with the transition so I turned down a high paying job across the state. The following week a day before I was due to get another weeks vacation they moved me out of my office before dawn, changed the locks and told me they changed their minds, handed me one weeks vacation, shut and locked the door with me standing outside. This is a company that I started and built up to well over a hundred employees. It was my baby. Any time you think you are in solid and will be working next week, watch out. Look at all the retirement and medical that GM retires had and then suddenly didn't have. Most everyone on this site knows what to do and how to do it to become full time. Their biggest problem they lack self confidence. Self confidence will come from study, practice and keeping records. I don't mean to sound hard, but it is a hard world when you can't physically work, your retirement is getting eaten up with inflation and you don't have enough money for gas. I am lucky enough that our cars are paid for and the only debt we have is our home. The monthly mortgage payment is $100 more than my retirement and when we get through paying utilities and insurance with my wifes retirement we have about $250 left for food and entertainment and medical co-payments. If any one of you are in the same kettle stew I feel for you. If you don't do something about it thats your own fault. Me, I'm going to handicap full time till I'm out of the mess I've gotten myself in. I tried starting in February and fell on my backside. The first of March I started again only now I'm following the guidelines that have been set down before me by those that are smarter than myself and I seek their counsel every day in the literature provided. I will prevail. Froggy Last edited by froggy; 03-21-2008 at 11:51 PM. |

It's none of my buisness but I hope your not taking money out of that $250 you have left over monthly to play the horses. This downward spiral of the economy will only get worse.
