Hmmm............ I like many things, Jeff. Your response sounds a bit snippy, and I feel i must have offended in some way. I assure you, no offense was intended.

I never was much good at marching in step though, even in high school band. A thousand pardons if I have fallen out of step once again.

Dick

Running styles

I don't remember which follow-up discusses this, but Doc stated it was possible for a horse to go wire to wire, and be considered "sustained on the lead" The last fraction being one of the fastest in the race.

check the follow -ups for a complete description

In Modern Pace Handicapping, Tom talks about a "front running closer." I don't know if this fits what you guys are talking about exactly, but the basic premise if I remember correctly, is a horse who can take the lead, but also has the best third fraction (or late pace?).

I'm paraphrasing, but I believe Tom said, "If you find one of these, run, don't walk to the window."

Running styles: Something that I find confusing is that the running style that I appoint to a horse by eyeballing winning or close efforts, is sometimes not the same running style as that of the paceline that I picked. For example I'll designate a horse Early because of a winning effort 6 lines back. The line I use may be the last line and the horse ran a 3rd ranked 1st fraction, a 1st ranked 2nd fraction etc. So it doesn't look very Early.
Also once in a while I've picked a wire to wire winner and also used that as a pace line. However I've found that (on some occasions)that the second fraction is stronger than the first.
Hello 'Tiger, being pretty new here too, please take my two cents with as many grains of salt as you see fit. But the way I see it the pace line should be taken from a race where the horse has done well in the running style that suits him. So if he wins or does well when running early and you take a line where he maybe didn't do so well and ran as a pressser wouldn't make a lot of sense to me.

Dick and Jeff,

I responded to both of you but for some reason my response which was
positive and cordial to both parties was deleted

Dick, thanks for the kind words.

Jeff, I explained the last 3 items for you.

It seems the server was having problems.

Maybe my response will mystically re-appear.

Oh well.

I realize the server went down this afternoon and that possibly the post got deleted in the confusion. There's no need to re-post it because if either Dick or Jeff have further interest they know how to reach me.

Thank you for your concern. Nice job with the contest. It's very entertaining and fun for me to compete.
