Also when it comes to entering the TV using the DRF or TM PPs cut the TV in half and never enter a number greater than + or - 9. Example TV -21 , cut this in half and round down. The number you would enter for TV would be -9 not -10. On the plus side the same thing applies lets say the TV is 5 , cut this in half and round down , enter 2 as the TV. A TV of + or - 1 will be 0.

I'd second Ramon's approach to using half the DTV when using that number for input into manual entry programs. Doc's formula for Val always used half the DTV, although Val3c now effectively uses the whole DTV (due to the TM data source change last year). Spec160 and RDSS use half the DTV by default.
One of Doc's older papers on Incremental Energy exertion made the case that a fair portion of daily final time variation (i.e. DTV) was not due to inherent surface speed for the day but rather due to the match up of contenders in a given race. Hence using half that DTV. I don't have an opinion on capping the net DTV at +-9, though I'd love to see any rigourous study... Ted

It worked for me even back when using Phase III.
I just used 1/2 of the TV above or below 17. There was no adjustment at 17 The TV is only as good as how many races were run that day in routes or run in sprints. They are I belive different TVs. Then you had the difference in class. What does the person that makes the number do when on a day only two routes were run, one a Grade I and the other MC 3yr fillies. Anybody doing a race with Phase III for instance could break it down even further and apportion so much of the TV to each fraction. That worked but was for me a waste of time. The TV is only as good as the person making it. I never had Valm, however I find not making any adjustments with the other programs I've used is just as good as making them, in the long run. I would respectfully disagree with Ramon's using 1/2 variant.
Reason why is simple. Doc's instructions when using manual type in programs were clear when he had the program written. It says enter variant. If he wanted to use 1/2 he would have stated that. "enter 1/2 variant". I worked many races over the phone with him back in the day of hand entry Pace Launcher 2 and he always entered the variant shown in the form. Having said that I have absloutely NO data/results that would deal in factual discussion. I am just going by what the creator of the software did with me many years ago. Richie

I agree with Richie I also worked many races with Doc
hand entering lines into PL4 He would ask me to read him the line as I entered it when I would come to a line with a high or low varient he would tell me don't use that line the adjustment will be so and so. I had no idea then what he was talking about I would ask him and As if it was yesterday I can hear him say Don't worry about it look at the ajustment screen The computer program makes the adjustments for you It takes 1/2 a point for every point over 16 17 18 which are equal Here is a horse from Mountaineer on 4/3/07 Race 10 I entered the first 5 lines for the horse into Valm I have a nice range of varients and two distances and a different track FL here is the first screen Last edited by admin; 04-04-2007 at 05:11 PM. |

I am looking at the box named TV ADJ
see how the numbers are adjusted 1/2 point up or down from a equal to zero 16 17 and 18 here is the screen again If you enter 1/2 of the varient arn't you messing up this adjustment that the program is making already ?? Last edited by admin; 04-04-2007 at 05:10 PM. |
