Not in right frame of mind for using Jims Match Up concepts Mike i'm afraid, so i'll leave it to LAST LINE ONLY concept users.
All the best though.

"By far the easiest races to work(in my opine) using Hat's 5 step approach are the ones where we project the 1c-2c pace using a positionally on the lead horse from the last race"
This is a quote from Richie's original post starting this thread. This seems to me to be a very logical approach. He finds these type of races the easiest to win using The Hat's 5 step approach. So, in order to help everyone else, he says lets concentrate on these for Saturday. Sounds perfectly logical to me. Start everyone off with the easiest races so that pattern recognition and the mind's eye are developed and then move onto more difficult races. This is a subset of races handicapped using the 5 step method. To me, this shows the mark of a solid teacher and people should not be getting bent out of shape for no reason. I know what Richie is trying to do , he is sincere, but Charlie is also a needed reminder not to get off the path.
We need a Charlie to keep or remind us to keep The MatchUp-Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw method honest, or as honest as possible from its creator, not to venture too far. All you have to do is look at all the other methods that try to use what they think are pieces of The MatchUp and are unsuccessful, because the pieces themselves are not even properly defined under the principles of The MatchUp as taught by Jim "THE HAT" Bradshaw, though they try to attribute "their" way as to what he taught, which is untrue. Like "fulcrums". But I like Doc's way, too. He did'nt care what it was, if you could win , consistantly, which means profit, he did'nt care what you use, just win, and often. I think Richie is maybe "creatively" teaching to get folks started, get confidence, etc., THEN reel'em back to the path of pure Bradshaw. There's THE MINDS EYE exercise that THE HAT taught Richie to teach us, this looks like a "creative" teaching extension by Richie on that method to reach folks who are inconsistant, confused, exhausted, lost , hopeless, abandoned and abandoning any hope of using THE MATCHUP. None of us will EVER matchup like THE HAT. Richie mentioned that THE HAT said everyone of his "successful" students saw it in their own way or could comprehend/visualize it a certain way and he used THAT WAY to teach them the MatchUp. For instance, a clue of one of the Parente brothers "way" of "seeing" the MatchUp.... Quote:

Maybe also, Richie is trying to reach those who give-up or gave-up on THE MATCHUP, so they can get SOME handle on it, before advancing and getting to harder and tougher races. Don't forget, Mr. Bradshaw ALSO presented the MatchUp in a manner to those who would not use it FULL- BORE- PURE/NO SOFTWARE, but simply to get "true" contenders into their computers, he did not leave these folks out. This reason can't be counted out either. The MatchUp is very exhausting, mentally, so I see where he's coming from. When one is piercing the form, sifting out and attempting to detect patterns, one feels , after a few races, ones brain physically pulsating in the skull, like one just did a mental ironman marathon, code breaking a ciper or puzzle thats in a non-sequential mathematical equation that may be valid or complete gibberish. The kind of brain energy THE HAT had, had to be incredible, off the charts. No software could do what he could do. So, keep up the good work everybody. Both are sincere here, Charlie and Richie, both views are valid and useful. VoodooFan

I’ve just read this thread. Let me run through this and make sure I’ve got this right.
This is kind of like a spot play, only it is used to project the pace. It is not a spot play for picking winners. The following four things must be in place (I’ve put them in a different order to make them easier for me to understand): 1. Use only the last race for projecting pace 2. That race must have run within 30 days of today 3. The horse must have been in the lead at the first and second calls 4. Unless the horse is young with few pacelines, he must have run in the lead at the same pace in a prior race. In other words, make sure that a fast time in the last race is not a fluke. If you have found a race that fits all four guidelines, you can use that paceline as your projected pace. Use that paceline/projected pace to match the race as you normally would. If I’ve got it wrong, please correct me. This is not something that can be done in every race. I play the NYRA tracks most of the time, and I can tell you that this situation doesn’t come up very often. But I’ll be on the lookout for it from now on. It makes sense, and it is actually a pretty conservative spot play. I agree that it departs from the 5-step-approach. But if you read through the Hat Check forum, you will see that Jim Bradshaw departed from the 5-step-approach many times when he got into the more advanced Match-Up concepts. And he encouraged us to find spot plays of our own. What Richie is demonstrating here is not a radical departure from the basics. It is simply a short-cut. The situation in which it can be used comes up infrequently, but Richie found that it works well, and is presenting it to us for our benefit. I'm thankful for any technique that reduces the workload. Regards, Marc |

Shortened Match Up Manual instruction
1) Look at ALL 10 past performances, determine the normal 1c time at a comparable distance to todays. 2) Do as above for 2c 5 Step Approach There are two ways to project pace. 1. First, decide the horse that is likely to take the lead. In picking the horse that is going to take the lead, find a horse that has truly been in the lead at the first call. In the event none of the horses definitely had the lead, use a time where a horse tried for the lead or was up close. Next, find a horse that was in the lead at the second call. Use the same procedure explained in finding the first call. Next, find a final time that matches the first two calls, and you have the projected pace of today's race. Never add beaten lengths to any of the fractional calls. Horses that do not match today's pace are will have difficulty winning. 2. Find the horse that has run the best against the fastest pace in his last race, at today's track, and at today's distance. Tandem races are good races used in this procedure. If none of the horse have run at today's distance consider any fast sprint, or any fast route line. This horse is the pace horse that all the other horses will be matched against. As stated earlier, if the last line ONLY was the Jim Bradshaws way, Jim Bradshaw would no doubt have instructed us to Project the Pace this way The tongue is making people deaf and that is definitely all the time and energy i'm going to waste here. All the best with your last line ONLY concept

At least the others on this thread are willing to consider that the so-called "last line concept" might be useful in the limited number of situations where it is applicable. Do you really understand what Richie is saying? Regards, Marc |
