Pacelines Off Tracks - Pace and Cap

I was wondering how many of you out there when picking pacelines will use an off track line if the track is fast.I wont do it because Im a firm believer that some horses prefer the off going and will run a better line on it.Jeff

I will use them when it looks right Jeff. No rules here. Every race and horse is different

Shoe,

Hi. If I have no other choice, I will use it. But ONLY if the horse performed well on an off-track (wet-fast/sloppy--not muddy) surface in the past. I will especially use it if the horse is an E or EP-type.

Remember, a wet-fast track is like the packed-down sand near the shoreline at the beach--pretty 'hard' ain't it? A sloppy track has more water on it but I'm not sure if it is still packed-down as much. Anyone know?

A track can become sloppy after a few minutes of a downpour. The degree of "sloppy" depends on how long and how hard it rains before the transition to a "muddy", then "heavy" and on to a "slow" surface. It all depends.
Track maintenance could also influence a degrading surface. IMHO

When I used programs that required paceline selection and today's surface was expected to be fast, I never chose an off-track paceline that resulted in a really great or really poor race. I usually did not use them unless it was the only line following a layoff and in my estimation appeared to be a "normal" performance for the horse.

horses can or cannot run on off tracks. If they can, use those lines. If they cannot, don't.
