Betting 2 horses a positive example
I was asked recently by a member of our group here at pace and Cap
If I think he should bet two horses to win ? I thought about it today and my advice to him and anyone else is, Try to work races and stucture your bet any way that ,although we all hate to lose- when you lose a race things make sense and you feel good about your decision I have set goals in the past to bet only one horse I have also made plans to just bet exactas and also another time just to bet pick 3's These experiments never work out too well for me But doing them I found I would see the same patterns that have sunk into my head and kick myself when the patterns produced winners that i would have had if I just bet two horses to win this is hard to put into words ,any time you do something by feelings its hard to show what exactlly you mean , Yesterday at Philly race 7 turned out to be basically a push but horses being bet down Is something I have to live with now that i bet ahead of time The race was a 5.5 furlong sprint I worked the race in my normal steps APV CR Best of the last 3 pacelines using Val 4 here is the BLBL My win bets were the 1 and the 3 Now in my mind this race was all about the 3 My readout over the years at philly have shown me that the top 2 LPR horses do very well at 5.5 furlongs Everthing fit great The pattern of the 1 ( it had 2 very good lines ) and the 2/1 Ml made it a bet but really I was hoping for the 3 horse I bet the 1 win only and the 3 WPS I bet enough on the 1 to make me a profit and cover the bet on the 3 For me this bet works because the 1 can win and the 3 could place and show , The 1 won the race and paid $6.20 the 3 rand dead last I must bet 2 horses I could have just bet the 3 WPS but I need two horses riunning in a race for my head My advice again is to bet the race any way that when its over win or lose your ok with your decision GS Bill |

Betting on two horses is best.Just pick your spot and pass on some races
when the odds are too low.Patience is the key.Since I play for a living,I know where i am strong.I play turf routes mostly. That's where my bread and butter is right now.Betting on two horses apply really well to turf routes because of the higher mutuels... |

Hello Ray
I sure envy you, that you can do this for your income I agree that if the race offers value and fits a winning pattern its the race I go into If not I just look for another GS Bill V |

Betting 2 horses has always been an interesting topic for me.
I never was an advocate of it until recently when I started play around with a hedging program and started using Synergism 2. I now look for selected races to bet and will proceed in this manner. 2 horses both over 7-2 odds ( I bet them both evenly). -------------------------------------------------------- 1 horse above 7-2 and 1 horse below 7-2 ( the lesser odds horse is used as a "breakeven horse" and is hedged accordingly) usually more money would go on the higher priced horse then if they were both bet evenly. My cut-off on the low odds horse is approx. 2-1 odds. If the low odds horse goes too low I might consider a win, place bet in the manner described below on the higher priced horse. This method is often referred to as the free bet method. ------------------------------------------------------------ Both horses are below 7-2 ( I pass the race). ------------------------------------------------------------ If one of my 2 horses scratch, the other would have to be at 7-2 or above. If this is the case, I bet 2.5 times the amount on place as I would bet on win. Ex. $4 win, $10 Place. Last edited by partsnut; 05-09-2007 at 03:11 PM. |

I usually bet 2 horses when I get the odds. When the odds are not looking good I usually open up a pick 3. If I get decent odds on 1 of my 2, I will open the Pick 3 with a single on the lower odds horse.

For illustration purposes, let's take last nights race from CTX where the winner paid $ 9.00.
If I were to bet equal units of $10.00 each on 2 horses and got the winner, MY ROI would have been 1.25 (a $25.00 return on $ 20.00 bet). Instead I chose to hedge the shorter price pick (break even) and place my 2 horse picks as a single unit bet ($ 10.00). My higher priced horse won and yielded $ 17.00 on a $10.00 bet (ROI 1.70) I risked half the amount and got a better ROI. In the long run this will prove to be a more prudent way to bet, because betting into short odds horses, in my opinion is not the way to make money, especially if you are a 2 horse bettor. See example below. As illustrated, this method of betting allow me to place slightly more money on the higher priced horse. In the long run this will add up. That's another good way to go,Partsnut...or bet the third choice if the odds
were good...I remember Mark Cramer when he bet two high odds horses from the Methodology's top picks and made a good profit, which he donated to charity....I think he did 50 races and proved that it can be done... |
