maidens and the evolution of speed

baby races are different for any number of reasons, but the MOST unique thing is that these animals are LEARNING to apportion their speed.

6th race - Aqueduct - April 06, 2006
Pgm Horse Win Place Show
6 Imperial Zip 18.40 5.90 4.60
7 Mr Sam I Am 2.80 2.40
9 Back Door Deal 4.70

They tip their hand by running a good race to the second call right before they graduate, regardless OFTEN of how they finish up as this readout will attest. If this were a straight contest for winners, one would strongly downplay the 6's chances late, but this one GAINED from that experience to graduate today.
