heading down the correct path
Both my parents are gone now, and there isn't a day goes by that I don't think of how UNIQUE my childhood was being directed by them. They never dictated to me but provided me with several good solid choices so it was as if it was ME making a decision when all the while they had set up all the parameters directing me toward a good end.
On my 16th birthday my mother gave me a simple card for my birthday. In it were words of wisdom written a very long time ago in another country, but evoked the kind of generously caring direction that she always put me on. I was amazed (at that time but not later) at how seemingly irrelevant all of the content was, but I kept it in my wallet for over 20 years until I had to, at last, make another to carry it with me. YOU MIGHT RECOGNIZE THE WISDOM If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to broken, And stoop and build 'em up with worn out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!' If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run - Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son! All these years later, I thank her every day for that direction and insight. Last edited by Tim Y; 10-21-2008 at 06:07 PM. |

A long time ago. when I was in high school, this was not only required reading, but we had to memorize it - a labour of love even back then. I haven't thought about it for years.
I thank you for bringing it back to mind. Barb |

It is too bad that the fundamentalist movement (around the world) can never understand it is a personal view of life that keeps you in it, not any associations whether that be ethnic, political or religon.
You are what you are and how you react to challenges and you have to find an internal moral compass to stay on track. My mother gave me that in these words. |

Great stuff Tim. Ironically, someone just posted the same thing on the Internet Movie Database Message Board:

One of the best site on all of the internet: I frequent it regularly.
Great thoughts are the ones everyone can relate to. |

Old movies are great lessons in life
My late wife aided me in the understanding of photoplay plots and collected over 5000 old movies. She could tell you the set decorator, the screenplay writer, the sound editor or casting director (she thought that was a position that should be awarded an Oscar) on most of the old ones of the 40's and 50's. She could quote, line for line, scene after scene from old movies and we used to use that as a second language when we wanted to keep an idea secret from those around us. If she said "Thye're the two busiest people is this whole county" (a line from Junior Bonner Ida Lupino to Steve McQueen) I knew she was telling me that someone was "uppity."
We first saw a VCR at the House of the Future at Disneyland back in the mid 60's and she sat down and wrote me a list of 120 movies she wanted. Once we got a machine in 1978, it took us until 1992 to get the last one on the list McClintock. She could see a new movie and twenty minutes into it, she would make me stop the tape, scribbled something on a piece of paper and then AFTER the movie, she would have written the essence of the plot right there. She would do it 8 out of 10 times and it just astounded me. |

McLintock is a lot of fun, especially the "I won't, I won't, the hell I won't" scene between Duke and Leo Gordon. Leo was also Duke's adversary in HONDO. The first time I ever saw a reference to a VCR was in an episode of THE FUGITIVE. That was 1966-67 and I wanted one ever since. They were pricey when they first came out and I waited until 1980 to get one. I have about 3,000 movies on tape, most from the 30s and 40s. I'll be 57 next week, so most of my collection is from before my time, but they are what I grew up with on TV. |

One of my favorites is "If I Had a Million" which was the stimulus for the TV show The Millionaire. One of the strangest is George Raft as a chronically bad check writer being given a good check that he can't cash!! |
