I hide him and see what comes up next. Sometimes you'll see that it changes the positions on the BL of the other horses. If the top tier horse after hides looks strong enough and the odds are 5/2 or better I will use that one as my first bet. Then I will look at my 3rd tier. I want very good odds here, like 7/1 or better. If that's the case, and if it's got some good corollaries, and especially if you see that long shot pattern in your 3rd tier horse, then I will bet against the favourite.
Otherwise I will pass.

I've found that a strong percentage of the time the favourite does not win.
