Welcome James!
You should have received a 'welcome email' when you joined last week with a number of links for you to investigate. If not, just let me know and I'll resend.
Ernie's advice is pretty much one of the the starting points. As a member of PaceandCap, you have access to the full Sartin Library, so dive in. I know you have read Tom Brohamer's book (and met Tom) so that gives you an overview of the Sartin methodology circa 1991. You may consider watching some of the RDSS videos and experimenting with RDSS (starting with the eval version and 5000 race 2010 database) to become familiar with how many of us analyse races according to the concepts you read about in the later Follow Ups.
I would say, most of all, after you have done some study in a particular area, formulate a few specific questions then post them here for response. If you do end up using software and can make use of a screen capture tool (like Windows Snip, or ScreenHunterFree, or Snagit) to illustrate your questions (such as you see in the various images presented here) that will help the feedback process.
Wishing you all the best, and looking forward to hearing more!
cheers,
Ted
