Tim, I can't disagree with your argument but, on the other hand, I believe there is merit in having a good understanding of concepts behind what the program is telling us.
I think virtually every visitor to this site has at least some insight into the implications of horses that ran against the fastest pace relative to their competitors. I find it strange that none of us (at least so far) can offer an explanation of what "best overcame the pace they ran against" means and the implications it has for understanding races.
