The Sphere (Jeff Platt)

Jeff Platt (Jcapper) made mention on a PaceAdvantage thread recently of an article he had written titled The Sphere which deals with his learning experiences, partly in the course of evolving his own software, but primarily in the realms of the process of focus, discipline and equanimity in the handicapping process. The tell-tale signs of a winner (and not just at the races).

Here is a link to that article, and thanks Jeff!

Ted,

Thanks for posting this. Many great points. It seems that focus and discipline is an area that many of us need to work on (certainly myself included.) For me, it's something that I can strive for and offers hope for success in the long run.

Ted,

Thanks for posting this article.

I got the sentence below out of one of his answers to a question about exotics.

"Having a fair degree of success just grinding out steady profits with win bets."

I think that if you want to win you must stay with what works for you.

Agree, Froggy. Plus depending on the state, you're usually looking at a higher take out on exotics, at least 2.5% higher on exactas and in many cases, 5% higher. The take out on other exotic bets are even higher than that.

Like it or not, it's just more a handicapper has to overcome.

One of the interesting points brought out in this piece is to not allow outside distractions to occupy your thoughts during your decision making process i.e leave the problems of the world at home.Maybe this is why the Pros isolate themselves at the track from friends etc they are not engaged in a round table with a lot of distractions.

Want to improve your R.O.I by 10 % ?

Next time when you visit your Betting site instead of sitting while handicapping try standing. Sitting tends to lower a persons mental state, when you become relaxed your mental energy and concentration decreases. Standing with a slight rocking motion prevents you from being relaxed and increases your awareness. Your brain is at a more higher state, all my good ideas I have ever came up with were while I was standing. Bring your printouts and rest them on a firm clip board and see for your self how much better your mind is at focusing on the task.

You know this definitely works. And when I'm putting in a long session of watching replays, I usually do it standing up, in front of my PC. It gives me a stiff neck after a half hour or so and it gets a bit tricky maneuvering the mouse but it definitely keeps me on my toes. Why in the world would I want to relax while I'm using my brain?

Try this at your own risk. Work up to the 4 hour or so sessions.

Interesting, how two people, without knowing one another, given the same challenge, can come up with the same way to deal with that challenge.

Like Leibnitz and Newton discovering Calculus at the same time.

That is a photo of Regal Intention after winning the British Columbia Derby right before he went to the Breeder's Cup Classic at Aqueduct. Unfortunately, right on the pace with Gate Dancer, he suffered a career ending injury.
