Getting a New Computer, need some advice
 

I'm finally going to get a new computer. My existing one, an apple Mac Book {Pro is a mess.

I'd like a little advice on what to buy. I have a max of $300 to spend. Should I get a laptop or a desktop? I understand that I can get a new computer for as little as $150. That' seems to be the case from browsing on line the Walmart site. Is that really the case and can I get a decent computer for that money? I'm going to be using it exclusively for RDSS handicapping. I'd appreciate any advice you guys have on what are the minimum things I need to have with the computer and what brands are most likely to fill the bill in my price range?

Get a tablet/portable with at least Intel i5 processor, 4Gb memory, 100 Gb disk storage, screen resolution preferably 1920 x 1080 though lower res is OK, will just have to re-configure RDSS screens a bit.

Needs to run Windows 10 (maybe Win 11, a few RDSS users say it's no problem) - and NOT Windows S version (security) which only runs Microsoft apps.

Needs to connect to internet, obviously. Capacity for an external mouse and real keyboard (i.e. not a screen-based keyboard) is almost a necessity.

There is a huge deficit of semiconductor chips right now, so computers are a lot more expensive than they should be...

It has a weaker CPU than Ted recommended, but it should be ok for RDSS2. You might have to wait a bit when you are assembling a race card, but you should be ok moving from screen to screen picking pacelines and looking at the analysis. They have over 33,000 reviews and average a 4.6 out of 5, so it seems like most people find it sufficient and I think you will as well.

One thing to note, like a lot of less expensive computers, it will come in Safe mode, or Windows S, which as Ted points out, will not allow RDSS. So when you get the laptop, you are going to have to switch out of S mode, following the instructions here : https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...f-031bfb28a307.

Personally, I like the bigger screen which is easier on my old eyes, and I like the weight of 4 lbs, which means it is pretty easy to bring to the casino with me. I like Acer as a brand and I think this will work for just running RDSS 2.

Just want to confirm that RDSS does not work on a Mac. I'm thinking about an upgrade and was considering the Mac.

Kisha, RDSS works fine on a Mac! :thumb: You need to install a Windows emulating program like Parallels. Or you can use an alternative like VirtualBox. Run Windows 10 or Windows 11 in these environments then install RDSS in Windows, and there you go. About a half dozen RDSS users that I know of do this. Perhaps they'll chime in!

RDSS runs perfectly on Macs. I pay a yearly subscription to Parallels in order to run Windows on my Mini or my MacBook Pro. Have been doing this for ten years.

I just purchased a Intel NUC. Tiny computer. Seems to be a power house so far. Price was 1,000. Takes up no space at all.
