Looking at the 2018 edition of the Run for the Roses, several things stick out to me. Good quality speed horses, several legitimate closers who I usually favor, one unknown horse called Mendelssohn who seems to have a high cruising speed and a question once again about the weather.
Now this is how I weed out the contenders from the pretenders. In my mind there are only two good quality speed horses in this race, Magnum Moon(16) and Bolt D’oro(11). Justify may be the fastest horse in the race on paper, but Promises Fulfilled(3) and Flameaway(4) will give him all he can handle and I think he will fold by the top of the stretch and that doesn’t bode well for the other pacesetters. At this stage of the race I see Magnum Moon along with Bolt D’Oro and Mendelssohn(14) all vying for the top spot, while the legitimate closers Vino Rosso(18), Audible(5), Lone Sailor(8), Good Magic(6) and My Boy Jack(10) are all putting in their runs trying to eclipse those top three other horses.
